BENEFIT RAISES $45,000 FOR
EAST COUNTY PROJECTS
El Cajon, California – September 2, 2005 – More than 300 people turned out
at Sycuan’s Singing Hills Golf Resort recently to sing happy birthday to
B.W. “Stoney” Stone, founder of Stoney’s Kids, and Wendell Cutting, chief
of staff to Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-El Cajon, who turned their combined 139-year
birthday party into a fundraiser for Stoney’s Kids. As hoped for, they also
brought their checkbooks.
“Between the live and silent auctions, and many generous donations, Stoney’s
Kids received more than $45,000, with more checks arriving every day,” said
Stoney’s Kids president, Les Hart. “We have several projects to tackle this
year. This definitely helps us help the children of East County.”
Working closely with the Cajon Valley Union School District, one new project
for Stoney’s Kids is a program called READ 180, which is designed to help struggling
readers. It is currently in use in more than 5,000 classrooms nationwide with
positive results. Additional projects include a campaign to help fight truancy
and absenteeism in the schools, and the upcoming East County Toy and Food Drive
with the Salvation Army.
To date, Stoney’s Kids has raised and donated more than $500,000 to these
and other organizations to benefit the children of East County.
Founded in 1991 by B.W. “Stoney” Stone, Stoney’s Kids is a non-profit organization
dedicated to helping the children of East County. Formerly known as the East
County Youth Development Advisory Council, Stoney’s Kids is an all-volunteer
organization supported by donations and fundraising activities. Nearly 100%
of money raised directly helps East County youth. For several years, Stoney’s
Kids has provided shoes for the El Cajon Valley High School Athletic Programs.
In addition to special tasks as needed, long-term projects funded by the organization
include the East County Toy and Food Drive, East County Justice Program, and
scholarships for needy families for the El Cajon Parks and Recreation Department.
